Day 40: Goodbye to the Mississippi Valley

On Day 18 we crossed the Canadian River east of Tucumcari, New Mexico. Since then all the ground water and rain we’ve seen ultimately drains into the Mississippi. Today we finally crossed into land which drains into Lake Erie and the Atlantic Ocean rather than the Gulf of Mexico. We also crossed into state #11, Pennsylvania.

It was only the second day we started out in the rain. It rained steadily this morning, stopped long enough for some people to take off their rain gear, and then poured with some scattered hail which hit Chad but not me. It cleared for good at the White Turkey Drive-In, a perennial favorite for turkey sandwiches and root beer floats.

A perennial favorite
A really good root beer float

The drive-in is in Conneaut, Ohio, a town known for its snow clearing, of all things.

Tomorrow is our last rest day. Tonight was a group dinner and laundry.

Clockwise from left: Me, Ron, Lee, Jean, Lisa, Chris, Doug, Linda, Kathy (Gene’s sister-in-law, not riding), Gene (barely), and Chad.

Now that is an awesome Root Beer Float ! Worth one day’s ride ! Over 2,800 miles ! I can’t help but place exclamation points on these statements. What a ride ! Cheers to the final miles, keep on blogging. Almost feel like I’m with you, well, except my muscles aren’t burning.
