Day 5: Resting in Kaslo

We’re in Canada now

Kaslo is another pretty little town on a big lake. Given my continuing wrist pain I chose to hike instead of riding. There are several well maintained trails near town, one of which ends in a series of “Hide & Seek” sculptures.

Same creek as yesterday, with more water
Smoke on the water. Fortunately it hasn’t been a problem for us.

Kaslo was originally a silver mining town. A steamship was used to move the ore downstream for smelting. The steamer is very reminiscent of the 1982 movie “Fitzcarraldo”, a Werner Herzog movie in which they drag an intact steamship over a mountain. It’s quite the artsy movie with Klaus Kinski and the recently passed Claudia Cardinale. The better movie is “Burden of Dreams”, a documentary about the making of Fitzcarraldo. There’s also “Soldier of Illusion”, a parody of “Burden of Dreams”.

Not quite an opera house
I can be arty, too

Excellent dinner at the Kaslo Hotel. Crossing the lake tomorrow.
