Day 4: The Long and Straight Road

I-10 East at the Chiriaco Summit

97 miles through the desert today, from Indio to Blythe, California. Not a lot of climbing, and even fewer turns. Riding on the Interstate was really not bad. The road is good with consistent 12′ shoulders. Riding 10 feet away from a semi going 70 feels a lot safer than riding 3 feet from a pickup going 45 (either can kill you). The truckers were consistently courteous, moving into the left lane when possible. This being California, someone often took advantage of the chance to pass on the right.

The problem the Interstate brings is innumerable small pieces of steel on the shoulder from shredded steel belted tires. I dug 5 wires out of my tires, 2 of which flattened the tire. Now I’m up to 3 flats.

We also briefly visited the George Patton Memorial. It’s at the entrance to Fort Young, used in WW II for desert training. Good place for it.

Tomorrow is the longest ride of the trip, 115 miles of desert to Wickenburg, Arizona.

What the bleeding what? This is amazing! I had no idea you both were doing this. Sounds awesome. I have always dreamed of doing cross-country biking but I just though it would be too grueling. You have inspired me. Although I still may not decide to do it. Vicarious it will be for now!

    1. Glad you’re with us. Today was a little grueling, but it could have been a lot worse. Most of the riders are retirees so you still have time to prepare.

Yea, maybe so, maybe so… I never had thought it a possibility. But doing it with trusted guides makes it feel much more doable.
