Day 10: Winslow, Arizona

That corner

Today was a 96 mile ride from Flagstaff to Holbrook, Arizona. It was nearly all downhill with a few drops of rain. The day was marred only by multiple flat tires. I had four, starting with one before we even began (a “hotel flat”) and ending with the last about 5 miles from the end, just as I left I-40. As before, it’s all those tiny pieces of wire on the shoulder.

On the way we stopped for milkshakes in Winslow. There’s not much left of Winslow, so they’ve made the most of their mention in the Eagles song “Take It Easy.” You’ll notice from the picture above that the wall is merely a facade with a park behind it and a flatbed Ford out front.

Such a fine sight to see

It made me think about other towns named in songs. What about “I met a gin soaked barroom queen in Memphis”? I’m not sure that would make as good a photo op.

The next spot is where a large teaser sign saying “Here It Is” would tempt drivers to stop to see a large concrete rabbit at the Jack Rabbit Trading Post. Naturally, we have a picture of Chad standing next to a rabbit.

And last, Holbrook, Arizona, which has only the Wigwam Motel and proximity to the Petrified Forest National Park as its claims to fame. Tomorrow we plan to take a detour from our route to go through the Park.

We’ve gotten through the hard first week of the tour. Tomorrow is another relatively flat 92 mile trip to state number three and Gallup, New Mexico.

We used to go through Winslow all the time, driving between Boulder and LA. It was a big strip of stores and motels. That’s all gone? Sad…

  3. We continue to enjoy your pictures and journal remarks. Lots of interesting things/places and some tasty looking food to see. Here’s a song with a city’s name in it that might keep your mind focused on the general direction you’re headed: “As We Walk to Fenway Park in Boston Town”.
