Day 17: The Loneliest Highway in America

New Mexico Highway 104

Today we had a beautiful 109 mile ride through remote New Mexico from Las Vegas to Tucumcari. We were told it was named “The Loneliest Highway in America” but actual documentation of this is sparse. It’s a very quiet road with endless views. No rain, no hail, no flats, and no oppressive heat.

All this was topped off with tacos in the hotel and Cherry Garcia from across the street. Tomorrow it’s another long straight road into the Lone Star state.

The only downside of the day was the passing of Uncle John, the eldest brother of Stacy’s father. John was a kind and brilliant man who was the patriarch of a large family and leaves behind a huge scientific legacy. We’re all better off for having known him.

You’re actually going through the country where our Mom, Judith Harris is buried, in her favorite kind of land. Favorite for both of them actually. Kind and brilliant, that pretty much nails it. Send some of that big sky country out to him as he journeys to his next adventure…

  2. I think “The Big Empty” is apt for the area between Las Vegas and Tucumcari. Not much there.

I’m thinking “no flats” is a great highlight. Are the replacement tubes at your expense or included with the tour ? Sounds like a great side business, tire tube sales truck following bicycle tour groups.
Hope you all have more opportunities to find parallel roads away from traffic and tire popping debris. Are you having dreams at night about biking along the hiway?
The family e-mail is full of remembrances and much deserved kind words for John. I’m so glad that his family had a gathering recently and were all able to enjoy each other and the time together. It is beautiful to see the pictures of them all together.

    1. They provide tubes at cost. The interstate highway is the source of the large majority of the flats. Going through the desert, especially in the passes, the interstate is the only option. I think we’re done with that.
I’m very glad we were all able to get together with John last summer when he was still himself. That’s the way to remember him.
