Day 20: Kansas

A machine to make Stacy green with envy

Welcome to Kansas. Today was a short 42 mile ride from Guymon, OK to Liberal, Kansas. The high school team here are the Redskins. Liberal? Indeed not! Last night we had a ferocious thunderstorm in Guymon, and today we skirted more storms to our south and east. Alas, tomorrow they should catch up with us. The forecast is for thunderstorms all day from here to Dodge City. At least they should be accompanied by a strong tailwind.

The first highlight of the day (other than the late start at 8:30) was the Mid-America Air Museum in Liberal. It has a nice collection of military, commercial, and experimental planes.

What really made the museum special was our fellow riders. Stephanie was in the RAF and told us stories about her role there. Simon is a chief aerodynamic engineer in wing design at Airbus. He was very excited about the planes and gave us very knowledgeable explanations of the features on some of the planes. His favorites were the F-4 and the F-14.

After that was lunch of Kansas City style dry rubbed ribs. The second highlight was milkshakes at Braum’s after dinner. Braum’s is a regional chain started in Oklahoma City. It’s really good. Tomorrow we’re back to riding some real miles.

Make sure you get some soft serve frozen custard while you’re in the Midwest.

    1. There’s big farm equipment everywhere. John Deere, New Holland, Case, and Kubota. I had never heard of Braum’s but their ice cream is really good. We’re out of their territory now.
