Day 21: Red Sky in the Morning

Dawn over Liberal, Kansas

Today was an 84 mile ride from Liberal to Dodge City, Kansas. The forecast last night was for thunderstorms all morning, and the sky this morning said “Take warning.” The storms never materialized and we wound up having a great ride with stiff crosswinds which turned into a strong tailwind for the last 20 miles. It was overcast and stayed cool, so the riding was nearly ideal.

Kansas is industrial agriculture in a big way. Silos like these are found in every town. There’s also a surprising (to me) number of wind turbines. They didn’t photograph well.

Our SAG stop was at the hideout of the Dalton Gang, a family of bank robbers based in Meade, Kansas. For Stacy’s benefit, here’s their collection of horse bits. Who knew there were so many?

And that’s all there is. Dinner at IHOP next door and the Royals-Nationals game for the evening entertainment. Tomorrow the weather looks good for our ride to Great Bend, Kansas.

  1. I remember driving through Kansas. So incredibly flat and featureless. There really isn’t much to say or show about it.

I’ve heard about the wind farms. Quite profitable for landowners and more reliable than food in hard times…

Some people had a very good time and were already planning for next year. 🌞
