Day 24: Kansas Hills, such as they are

The Flint Hills

Today was an 81 mile ride to Emporia, Kansas, the self-proclaimed gravel cycling capital of the world. There’s a big series of gravel rides this weekend, some of which require several years trying through a lottery system to enter. We’ll be here for a rest day tomorrow but gone by the weekend. We rode through rolling hills and flat plains with a light crosswind and warm temperatures. The photo above is from the Flint Hills area, where the layers of sediment from the time when this was seafloor are pretty obvious. There are also wide open plains.

Wide open plains, with barely visible cattle at the water hole

Emporia, Kansas is a (very) quiet little town which is basically closed on Mondays, especially Memorial Day. We are sharing our hotel with some long term avian residents.

Tomorrow is an off day. Peter discovered a large crack in his bike’s titanium frame, so he needs to buy a new bike tomorrow. No such excitement for me and Chad. Wednesday it’s on to Topeka.

  4. After your rest day, on the road to Topeka, you turn left at a four-corner village called Dover. On your right before you make the turn is the Sommerset Cafe.

Traditionally, CrossRoads riders stop for pie.

In 2008, Good Morning America had a contest to name the country’s best pies. The winner was a coconut cream pie baked by Norma Grubb of the Sommerset Hall Café in Dover.

    Best Pie in America!

I was privileged to meet Norma in 2009. I think newspaper clippings are framed on the walls. Norma passed away at the ripe old age of 90 in 2011.

  5. Topeka has a big place in my heart. I would have definitely ended up a Kansas girl in Topeka if I had not fallen head over heels for my (first) ex-husband. I’m so glad I ended up in Grants Pass, but I still love Topeka. I’ll be there in June to meet my newest grand-nephew.

  6. We are enjoying each of your scenic pictures and the accompanying stories. We’re also following a former student’s 480 mile walk on Le Chemin on The Camino in France. She and her walking partner just reached the 400 mile point.
