Day 31: A Long Ride

Parts of Illinois are very flat

Today was a 107 mile ride through some very flat land. When I first saw the itinerary I thought, “Gee, after a month of riding a 107 mile day will seem like nothing!” Au contraire! Chad felt very strong all day, which he attributed to a large stack of pancakes in the morning. His energy gave out at about mile 102, suggesting that the stack might have been one pancake short. I struggled against the headwind most of the afternoon, although I was still able to maintain a 15+ mph average for the distance. The only real climb all day was the bridge crossing the Illinois River.

Now we’re in Springfield, Illinois, home to a large power plant with Abraham Lincoln on the side.

The Pride of Springfield

Dinner was pizza and beer delivered to the hotel. The pizza was sliced in squares instead of wedges, as it usually is out West. Is this a Midwest thing?

Tomorrow it’s on to Champaign and a much anticipated rest day. I’ve worn out a pair of biking shorts which need to be replaced. Big plans!

  1. Hi Spencer,

By this time in the ride we were starving and unable to get enough food…my wife Nancy met me in Champaign and we were able to go to an Italian restaurant called Biaggi’s Ristorante Italino. It was exactly what we needed…we went both nights in Champaign…I took everyone I could fit into my van.

It is outstanding, the portions were plentiful…It would be worth the Uber or Lyft ride….if you don’t enjoy it…look me up and I’ll pay for yours and Chads dinner and the Uber 😎!

( my daughter in law received her Doctorate from The University of Illinois so we have frequented the establishment on a number of occasions)

    1. We ate at a different downtown place called Nando’s. I got outvoted, and I think it was a good thing because the food was great

  2. Enjoy your well earned rest day! Hope you find the biking shorts you want. The Italian dinner suggestion sounds like a real treat!

    1. I know. Pizza places don’t seem to do that in Oregon
