Day 47: The Green Mountain State

The West River, near Brattleboro, Vermont

Vermont, state #13 of 15, is beautiful this time of year. People visit and think it would be nice to move here, only to wake up 6 months later under 4 feet of snow and wonder what went wrong. Today was great, with perfect weather and our last major climb of the trip. Then as we approached Brattleboro we hit the worst road surface of the whole trip, 3 miles of scarified blacktop followed by a mile of bad dirt road and a mile of horrible blacktop. Fortunately we will be out of Vermont after the first 2 miles tomorrow.

The Tomhannock Reservoir in New York

The day started with our group descending like a plague of locusts on the hotel breakfast. Today we attacked half an hour before the breakfast even opened, causing more confusion. When we coast as a group we also sound like a plague of locusts.

The day started windless as you can see from the photo.

Vermont had us climbing early.

A Vermont Farm
It’s a nice bridge, but I really took the picture as an excuse to get off the road for a minute
Ditto for the waterfall

Chad and I had ice cream afterwards at the Blueberry Haus in Brattleboro before heading to the hotel.

Downtown

In the hotel lobby there’s always the Crossroads map showing our progress and photos. It generates a lot of questions.

Today was 82 miles. Tomorrow is our last (!) full riding day, 90 miles into Burlington, Massachusetts. It’s hard to believe how far we’ve come and how close we are to the end.
