Day 49: We Did It!

Dipping wheels in the Atlantic Ocean, after 49 days and 3488 miles!

We came to this point gradually, then suddenly. After 7 weeks of riding we turned a corner and found ourselves looking at the Atlantic and the end.

The team. From left: Paul, Jean, David, Jill, Todd, Linda, Gene, Barbara, Doug, Mark B., Ron, Lee, Mark S., Simon, Christine, me, Chad, Lisa, Stephanie, and Peter. Not pictured: Dave, Joel.

We started late and rode 16 miles through a fine mist to the beach. About 3 miles from the end we stopped at Dunkin’ Donuts to regroup and ride the final miles together as a group with the SAG vehicles escorting us in front and back. Then we did the wheel dip, took a bunch of pictures, had lunch (at 10 am), and put the bikes on the truck to have them boxed up and shipped home. And that was that.

After we came back to the hotel and discovered that the entire hotel was without water all afternoon we went downtown for a walking tour of the Freedom Trail, which goes to many of the historic sites from pre-revolutionary Boston. We wound up in the North End, which is crowded and filled with fabulous aromas from the Italian restaurants and bakeries. We had a lobster dinner at the wharf and returned to the North End for dessert calzones. An altogether great last day which ended too late for a blog entry.

Saturday afternoon I fly back home. Chad will stay here tonight and take a train to New York for a few days. He’ll be spending a week travelling home via New York, Washington, DC, and Chicago. I’ll try to come up with some closing thoughts when I’m home with better internet.
